HELP Toastmasters Club Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest 2013/2014

On the 7th of September, 2013, HELP University Toastmasters had organised its club level Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contest! Overall, I'd say it was concluded with a resounding success! Kudos to our dedicated Organising Chair, TM Eminie, the altruistic role players, the fantastic judges led by the fantastic Chief Judge, DTM Mama Walia, last but not least, the courageous contestants! *applause*

The lovely OC, TM Eminie handed the token of appreciation to our lovely CJ, DTM Mama Walia.

The Humorous Speech Contest Chair with a broken toe, TM Isaac Miranda!

The wonderful audience during the break time. :)

The efficient and 'bubbly' Evaluation Contest Chair, CC Stanley Thomas Teng!!

Coming up next - The Evaluation Contest! So excited about it huh? :D

The contest result was as below:

Humorous Speech Contest:
Champion: Chong Kok Ian
1st runner up: Bryan Wong

Evaluation Contest:
Champion: Jocelyn Teh
1st runner up: Bryan Wong
2nd runner up: Lim Kai Jin

The Hilarious Ones :P

The Critical Ones. ;)

Congratulations to all the winners! After all, I personally think that winning doesn't really matter. It simply signifies the acknowledgement to hard work. What truly matters is that we all improve and excel as we progress. Thus, congratulations to all! :)

Nevertheless, come for our Area G3 Contest on the 21st of September! Details please find the previous post. :P

Stay tuned.

Friday 19 July 2013

Carpe Diem!

Many people tend to spend their days grumbling and regretting over what they had not done in the past. "I should've done that back then!" "If only I could turn back time, I definitely would..." This sort of conversation sounds so cliched, yet it's still happening all the time. However, we could never turn back time, as much as we want to. So, live today to the fullest, live as if you're dying tomorrow and carpe diem! Seize the day! :D

On the 6th of July, we had our club meeting which was honoured by the presence of our new Division G Governor, Ken Chan, ACG, ALB, who visited our club on the very first week of his term as the General Evaluator! We too had a lovely guest from Maxis Toastmasters who's none other than Nirmala Shanmugam, ACS, ALB! Besides, there were also CC Jeff Foong from D' Utama Advanced Toastmasters and Priscilla from Money Mastery Toastmasters.

It was the very first meeting conducted by our new president, TM Bryan Wong who delivered a spirited and revitalising presidential address right after the awakening knock by our SAA, TM Gerald who is a big fan of the gavel! After that, yours truly as the TOM then passed on to our adorable table topics master, TM Joyce who distributed a number of great topics, ranging from 'The future depends on what you do today', 'begin with the end in mind', 'do what you can, with what you have, at where you are', to 'life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing at all'.

TM Andrea: I used to use a microphone during the class presentation back then!

TM Jie Yen: Each day, I want to make a person smile... :)

TM Kok Weng: Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, ... xD

After the butter cookies break, we had five assignment speeches for that day. There were two amazing ice breakers, TM Grace with her speech entitled 3 Secret Fears, and our lovely treasurer, TM Andrea with her title Things You'll Never Know. They were evaluated by our immediate past VPM and immediate past VPE, TM Albert and TM Edward respectively. Next was our dedicated VPM aka wasabi girl, TM Jie Yen who attempted her CC project 2: Organising Your Speech. It was entitled Boomerang, a very sincere sharing about act of kindness. A good deed is like a boomerang, it will come back to you eventually. :) She was evaluated by a very experienced toastmaster, Nirmala, ACS, ALB who impressed us by her fruitful and constructive evaluation. We also had two members attempting CC#7: Research Your Topic. They were TM Kok Weng and TM Yi Ling. Coincidently and surprisingly, their topics were on a similar subject. Their titles were 'Social Media Addict' and 'Social Media' respectively! This tells us how amazing the hands of fate could be. ;) Their evaluators are Bryan Cheong, ACB, CL (long time no see!) and Jeff Foong, CC (nice to see you). :D

TM Edward: Well now you don't need a mic anymore!
TM Albert: You have a very good command of English!

Ken Chan, ACG, ALB: As a general evaluator, I generally evaluate... ;)

After the evaluation and award sessions, our dedicated Division G Governor, Ken Chan, ACG, ALB delivered a wonderful sharing on the Successful Club Series under the Toastmasters Education Programme. Everyone has a vivid picture of the toastmastering pathway after his influential speech!

The two lovely ice breakers. ;)
The Best Table Topic: TM Gerald!

The Best Speaker: TM Grace! :D
The very awesome evaluator: Nirmala, ACS, ALB!!

The new president and the new Division G Governor!

The meeting was then adjourned. See you on the 20th and the 27th of July! xD

A NEW CHAPTER

If we were to similise life to a book, there'll always be a number of chapters in our life. These chapters are the transitions in life, revealing our exposure and adventure in each period of time and what lessons we've gotten from them. Each chapter tells where you are emotionally. When you're given a chance to compose a new chapter in your life, how'd you write it? As for HELP Toastmasters, we can't promise that this is gonna be the most riveting and breathtaking chapter ever, but we promise to write this new chapter from the bottom of our hearts and make it a very jubilant and memorable one. :)

On the 8th of June, we had our very first meeting held by the new term of exco. For starters, kudos to our fabulous president, TM Yi Ling, who strained every nerve and sinew to pull off this marvellous meeting! We're particularly honoured with the presence of several notable guests, which comprised of our very honourable Division G Governor, DTM Thiagarajah Nesan (a.k.a Tiger) from MAS Melor Toastmasters; DTM Renganathan from Ernst & Young Toastmasters; the incoming Area B2 Governor, CC, CL Chironjit Das, who is also the president of CIMA Toastmasters; the very professional speaker, ATMS, Cl Dr Alvin Teoh from Sunway Toastmasters, and CC Reuben from Bangsar Toastmasters! We're jubilant to conclude that this meeting was a total success as everyone had fun and learnt something! :)

Division G Governor DTM Tiger and our president TM Yi Ling
You illustrated how to think differently with a game...
Imagine yourself lying down on the grass, you see blue sky...

Our pretty TOM, TM Jie Yen ;)

In this new chapter, many of us had our very first time for something, our president TM Yi Ling presented her very first presidential address, TM Jie Yen took her first challenge as the TOM, TM Joyce was the Table Topics Master for the first time, TM Jocelyn gave her first ever evaluation, and there were two amazing ice breaker's speeches!
And each of them certainly did a fantastic job! Congratulations to all of them!:D

Ice breaker number 1: TM Sharanya
When there's a will, there's a way!

Ice breaker number 2: TM Kai Jin

I have 23 soft toys at home!!!

Credits to our Table Topics Master, TM Joyce for preparing a set of topics which correlated to our theme so well, ranging from 'A new friendship', 'A new hope', 'Turn over a new leaf', 'A new relationship' to 'A new goal'. :D

CC,CL Ron: Forget about turning over a new leaf!
Take baby steps!!

TM Bryan: Ever heard of do-you-know-Bryan method?

TM Tommy: CC#2 Complete, Not Complete!!
CC, CL Siew Li: You truly are an actor!!

On top of that, there were also two awesome speakers attempting their CC project 8, who were none other than our 'Miss Red Barret' TM Kai Xuan with her speech entitled 'Combating your Stereotype' and the VPE of CIMA Toastmasters, TM Ryder Mah with his title 'Think Differently'.

TM Ryder Mah: What is the maximum amount of cakes you can get with four cuts on a round cake? Answer: 16!

TM Kai Xuan: A feminine guy is not necessary a GAY! :P

Wonderful speeches and evaluations! *Thumbs up*
Ice breaker's ribbons for TM Kai Jin and TM Sharanya. :)
The Best Table Topic Speaker: TM Denise Th'ng *claps*
The Best Prepared Speech Speaker: TM Kai Jin (congratulations!!)

The Best Evaluator: ATMS, CL Dr Alvin Teoh (the super evaluator) xD

A token of appreciation for our General Evaluator, DTM Tiger!!

Well as for me, If I were to write a new chapter in my life, I'm going to script it as if this was the last chapter, and write everything possible in it. So that I'll never have to wish that 'if only I could turn back time and go back to that chapter, I would've...' Perhaps we could always start a new chapter in life, but we can never go back to the previous chapters to alter what has been written. You can't cling to the past. Because no matter how tight you hold on, it's already gone. -quoted from HIMYM, S08E23 ;)

Oh no!

Dear friends,

Much to our regret, the meeting originally scheduled for Saturday, February 9, 2013, has been cancelled. With kind consideration, the club is fearful of being charged guilty for ruining any family reunion of our much enthusiastic members in such festive season of Chinese New Year.

However, the meeting on February 16, 2013 will be held as usual. We apologized for any inconvenience and disappointment this might have caused.

Thursday 31 January 2013

Upcoming meeting - the first meeting of February

Dear friends,

"Morning is wonderful. Its only drawback is that it comes at such an inconvenient time of day." Don't you just love the irony that it's the short livedness of the morning which makes it more desirable? How true is the saying, "be pleasant until ten o'clock in the morning and the rest of the day will take care of itself." Seize the morning and you'll seize the day.

Join us this Saturday morning as we enjoy the blissfulness of an auspicious morning, the Toastmasters' way.

Date: 2nd of February 2013

Time: 9:30 am till 12
Attire: Smart casual
Entrance Fee: FREE
Venue: Level 2, Block G, Department of Student Affairs, Pusat Bandar Damansara, 50490 Kuala Lumpur.

Wednesday 23 January 2013

Upcoming meeting - the last meeting of January

Dear friends,

As Winston Churchill had it before, "Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen."
It shows that listening is equally important as talking itself but here's a challenge,
Can we make others listen without saying the word "listen!" more than 10 times?!
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!

Please join us this Saturday morning as we explore on the art of being an empathizing speaker.

Date: 26th January 2013
Time: 9:30 am till 12
Attire: Smart casual
Entrance Fee: NO SUCH THING!
Venue: Level 2, Block G, Department of Student Affairs, Pusat Bandar Damansara, 50490 Kuala Lumpur.

Tuesday 15 January 2013

Upcoming meeting - the 3rd-Saturday-of-January meeting

Dear friends and guests,
I hate to make the announcement that the coming Saturday (19/01/13) meeting is cancelled, is it not?
Actually it is not!
THE TRUTH IS WE DO NOT DO CANCELLATION!
I apologize it's actually HELD BACK to a later time of the year (23/03/13) as we will have a joint meeting with Taylor's University Toastmasters Club!

The last-Saturday-of-the-month meeting (26/01/13) will of course still carry on as usual. So stay tuned!

Friday 4 January 2013
